David is getting us in the mood for Christmas — David is getting us in the mood for Christmas — and nothing kicks off November quite like bright red winterberries starting to glow against their fall foliage. 🎄❤️
Today he’s highlighting Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’ — a standout native holly that transitions beautifully into the holiday season.

Botanical notes:
• Botanical name: Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’
• Common name: Winterberry holly
• Family: Aquifoliaceae
• Native range: Eastern North America
• Habit: Deciduous holly — berries form while leaves are still on, then shine even brighter once foliage drops later in fall
• Size: ~6–8’ tall and wide
• Sun: Full sun to part shade
• Soil: Moist, acidic, well-drained soil; tolerant of wet sites once established
• Fruit: Heavy clusters of bright red berries loved by birds and excellent for seasonal arrangements
• Pollination: Requires a male holly — Ilex verticillata ‘Southern Gentleman’ is a compatible pollinizer
• Landscape use: Winter gardens, naturalized plantings, woodland edges, screens, wildlife gardens, cut branches

A reliable, festive native shrub bringing color, structure, and ecological value right as the landscape shifts toward winter.

A hardy Japanese primrose that brings a carpet of soft, fuzzy foliage and clusters of rich pink blooms to shady garden spaces in early spring. Primula kisoana naturalizes gently by rhizomes, forming loose colonies that return reliably year after year — a fantastic choice for woodland gardens, along paths, or tucked under deciduous shrubs where the spring light still reaches the soil.

A striking and underused native perennial, Napaea dioica is a tall, architectural plant often reaching 6–8 feet. Large, deeply lobed leaves provide a bold texture, and creamy-white mallow-like flowers bloom in mid to late summer. Dioecious (separate male and female plants), it thrives in moist soils and full to part sun. Ideal for naturalistic or rain garden settings.

Jerry was out sourcing in Vermont… We don’t k Jerry was out sourcing in Vermont…

We don’t know the cultivar name on this one, but the tag said Hemerocallis “Chris- Very Tall, Late, Yellow.”
What we do know is that it’s a very tall, late-season, yellow Daylily.

Jerry picked up a single plant and got right to work — dividing it the millstone. The result? 16 new plants out of 1, each vigorous and ready for the nursery or future design work.
