The science of fall planting goes far beyond chang The science of fall planting goes far beyond changing leaf color.

As daylight decreases, chlorophyll begins to break down and other pigments become visible. Xanthophylls bring out yellows, carotenoids contribute oranges, and anthocyanins create many of the reds and purples we associate with fall.

But those changes also tell us something important about what is happening inside the plant. Nutrients and sugars are being redistributed, water needs are changing, and plants are entering a stage that can be ideal for digging and transplanting.

Understanding leaf senescence helps landscape professionals make better decisions about fertilizing, watering, planting, and moving material as the season changes.

Camellias aren’t just for southern gardens. At Li Camellias aren’t just for southern gardens.

At Linden Hill, we stock cold-hardy selections including the April Series—Camellia japonica cultivars such as ‘April Kiss,’ ‘April Dawn,’ and ‘April Tryst’—known for their ability to perform into Zone 6 with proper siting.

We also grow selections from the Winter Series, developed using Camellia oleifera in crosses with other camellias. That C. oleifera parentage contributes much of the cold hardiness that makes these hybrids useful farther north.

And occasionally, we like to experiment with something a little more unusual, like the variegated Camellia sinensis ‘Lemon Tea,’ which is less cold hardy and better suited to Zone 7 conditions.

With camellias, hardiness is only part of the equation—placement matters. A protected site with light shade and less exposure to dramatic winter temperature fluctuations can make a significant difference in their performance.

The reward? Evergreen foliage and beautiful flowers when very little else is blooming.

Viburnum × pragense, commonly known as Prague vibu Viburnum × pragense, commonly known as Prague viburnum, is an evergreen to semi-evergreen hybrid created from a cross between Viburnum rhytidophyllum and Viburnum utile, two species native to China.

This combination brings together the bold, textured foliage of leatherleaf viburnum with the compact evergreen character of V. utile.

Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, Prague viburnum forms a dense, upright shrub, typically reaching about 8–12 feet tall and wide. Glossy, dark green foliage provides strong year-round structure, while pink buds open to lightly fragrant white flower clusters in spring. Red fruit can follow, maturing to black later in the season.

A useful choice for screening, hedging, shrub borders, or as an evergreen specimen in the landscape.

Viburnum × ‘Nantucket’ brings structure and year-r Viburnum × ‘Nantucket’ brings structure and year-round interest to the landscape with its upright habit and dark green, semi-evergreen foliage. In spring, it produces large clusters of white flowers, making it an excellent choice for mixed borders, screening, hedging, or as a specimen shrub.

Hardy in USDA Zones 6–8, Viburnum × ‘Nantucket’ performs well in full sun to partial shade and is drought tolerant once established.

A versatile woody plant with plenty of presence in the landscape.
